What is WCAG and does Drupal support it?

WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, a set of standards for making web content accessible to people with disabilities. The guidelines are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Drupal has a strong commitment to accessibility and its default themes meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards, the most common target for accessibility compliance. Core admin pages, forms, and content editing interfaces are all designed with accessibility in mind.

Contrib modules vary in their accessibility quality. When choosing modules, check their accessibility statements and test them yourself. Custom themes and content are your responsibility, not Drupal’s. The platform gives you the tools, but achieving compliance requires thoughtful implementation. Many government contracts and large organisations require WCAG compliance, which is one reason Drupal is popular in those sectors. Its accessibility foundation makes compliance achievable without starting from scratch.
